#The Vitage Tanning Drops were a pr sample/gift and I bought all the other products mentioned.
Following on from my favourite skincare products of 2018 here’s my embarrassingly late post on the makeup I used the most in 2018. I feel this is so ridiculously late that I couldn’t even bring myself to include ‘2018’ in the post title. I suppose it might have been better not to do these posts at all but I’ve been doing a ‘best of’ for the past 6 years year and I don’t won’t to break this small tradition.
Apart from the eye shadow sticks (more on those later) I’ve never been particularly interested in Charlotte Tilbury products as I found the hype that surrounds them off putting. However, in 2018, I decided to give the Pillow Talk Lip Cheat (16.50) a try and I absolutely love it. It made me rethink the brand and I’ve since been buying a lot more CT products. Another big success for me has been the Hollywood Flawless Filter (£30) – I dot if offer my cheeks and I love the way it wakes up my skin. I also love the limited edition Supstar Lips (£24) which I have in Sexy Lips. I would have also bought this in Pillow Talk and Happy Lips but they went out of stock very quickly. I think the brand would be crazy if they didn’t reintroduce these as a permanent part of their collection.
More often than not Complexion by Bare Minerals (£28) was my go-to for a base. The coverage is light, natural and moisturising and it blends into skin smoothly and quickly. It has SPF 30 but this comes from titanium dioxide which only protects against UVB and short range UVA rays (as opposed to zinc oxide which protects against short and long range UVA rays). Therefore I don’t rely on it for sun protection.
I used Vitage Illuminating Tanning Drops (£38) consistently over the year. I initially stopped once the cold weather set in but went back to it pretty quickly. It’s really good at turning around skin that’s looking tired, wan and washed out. It’s also so easy to use and never applies patchily. I’m surprised I’ve any left considering the amount of times I’ve used it so it’s worked out to be very good value.
I’ve used the Laura Mercier Blush Colour Infusion (£24) pretty consistently since they launched and I love how subtle and natural they look on the skin. I switch between Rose and Chai and think they’re both equally flattering. The colour’s buildable but I appreciate these might not be for everyone as they’re not overly pigmented.
There were two big mascara launches in 2018 – Nars Climax (from £9) and Hourglass Caution (from £12) – and there was much debate over which is better. I think it’s really hard to judge mascara definitively as how we like our lashes to look is such a personal thing. However, having tried them both I slightly preferred the extra fullness I got from the Hourglass. I surprised myself with this as I usually think of Hourglass as being overpriced and overrated.
For my bottom lashes I use Clinique Power Lash (£21) as I’m pretty much guaranteed not to get any under eye smearing or smudging with it.
I bought the Daniel Sandler Spoolie (£5.75) on a whim as I needed something cheap to add to a Feel Unique order so I could qualify for free shipping. It turned out to be a canny investment as I use it most days to comb through my eyelashes before applying mascara. This really helps my lashes look longer and prevents clogging, particularly so for my left eye as I sleep on my left side and they always end up bit crushed by the morning.
For eye lid colour it’s rare that I don’t use an eye shadow stick as they’re so quick, easy and pretty much foolproof. There’s not many I don’t like but my favourites have been the Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon in Dark Pearl (£19), Bobbi Brown Shadow Sick in Goldstone (£23.50) and Laura Mercier Cavier Stick in Amyethest (£24) For added definition I love the Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner in Steel Grey (£19.50). This is an ‘almost black’ but not as harsh and it glides on without dragging and doesn’t budge.
