Fragrance in skincare often splits opinion. There are those who enjoy the sensorial element of scent. Then there are those with sensitive skin who find fragrances can be a cause of irritation. I also suspect that even if there’s no obvious reaction to fragrance there’s a risk it could be causing low grade inflammation which isn’t immediately visible but has an affect over time.
Another problem with fragrance in skincare is that some people don’t like the smell. This can be a mild dislike to finding that some scents actually induce headaches and nausea. As someone who has a sensitivity to some smells I appreciate that this is a problem that shouldn’t be underestimated. There’s a really interesting piece in The Pool about how people’s health can be affected by fragrance and it’s something worth being aware of.
I prefer to avoid scented skincare as much as possible as it doesn’t benefit my skin and could potentially give me a headache and inflame my skin. However, a problem with a lot of un-fragranced products is that they don’t smell very pleasant due to the other ingredients or they contain masking ingredients to hide this smell which of course increases the chemical load of the products.
Therefore, I was very pleased to learn about the new Previse DermApothecary range that’s ‘Zero Fragrance’. This means they go a big step further than just being un-perfumed – the products literally smell of nothing and masking ingredients haven’t been used to achieve this. Personally, I think this makes the range significant and worthy of our attention.
Previse launched into the UK with 7 products (more are available in the US) and I have the Ozone Defence Nutrify Serum and the Marine Granules. Though I tend to shy away from physical exfoliators I did find the Marine Granules to be very gentle and it brightened up my skin very well.
The Ozone Defence Nutrify Serum is much more my kind of product. I’m a great believer in anti-oxidant serums particularly those that have been formulated to protect against pollution which this has. It contains Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamins B3, B5 and C. It has the feel/consistency and look of the average HA serum but it has the added protective ingredients and of course NO SCENT AT ALL. It absorbs quickly and leaves skin feeling soft and hydrated. It also layers well with sunscreen.
The Precise products are free from parabens, petroleum, mineral oil, PEGs, synthetic fragrances , essential oils and dyes. It definitely falls into the ‘clean’ or ‘green’ category of skincare however I’m wary of pushing this aspect of it too much. Though I prefer to avoid some of things on that list I don’t think parabens in products are a problem. Also, as with the clean eating trend, I think care needs to be taken with the term ‘clean’ as it implies other foods or products without that label are dirty and I don’t think that’s fair or true. But that’s a debate for another day!
