Zelens (one of my favourite skincare brands) don’t launch products that often which makes it particularly exciting when they come out with something new. Their latest skincare product is Marine Complex which is an anti-ageing cream for those with sensitive skin.
The best anti-ager for skin is retinol/retinoids but lots of people can’t or don’t want to use it because of how it makes their skin react. Marine Complex boosts collagen production which in turn addresses wrinkles as well as having a host of other benefits. It has strong anti-inflammatory properties, is deeply restorative and soothing so there’s no downside, even for those with very reactive skin.
It’s packed with 12 different types of uncontaminated algae from the abysmal zone which is a deep layer near the bottom of the ocean. Zelens is always completely transparent about the ingredients in their products and you can find a complete breakdown of the active ingredients and what each of them does along with the full ingredients list on the product page.
I find the anti-inflammatory aspect of Marine Complex especially interesting as ageing (external and internal) is the result of inflammation. When it comes to skin inflammation I think the general perception is that it only exists in a visible form such as redness, a rash etc. However, this isn’t always the case and you can get low-grade chronic inflammation that you can’t see but is slowly degrading collagen and elastin.
Marine Complex also oxygenises the skin, has microbes that have a probiotic effect and generally improves the skin barrier function. The results of a clinical study where the cream was applied twice daily for 28 days are pretty impressive:
Reduction in skin irritation to chemicals – 26%
Increase in skin moisture + 54.6%
Reduction of the volume of wrinkles – 25.6%
Reduction of the area of wrinkles – 16.2%
Increase in skin elasticity + 21.4%
Of course there are degrees of sensitive skin but Marine Complex has been tested on those with rosacea and it led to a reduction in redness. It’s probably worth pointing out that one of the ingredients is fragrance but this is at a level of 0.1% and it’s hypoallergenic. The skin type that Dr Lens doesn’t advice Marine Complex for is one that’s prone to acne.
I tried Marine Complex after having the Luminis M22 Laser treatment. This is a non-ablatavie treatment but it still made my skin very sensitive and hot in the cheeks. Everything I used made my skin flush red. I was at a loss as to what to use then remembered I had this and it was an absolute saviour. It didn’t make my skin go red but calmed and cooled it down. I genuinely think it helped my skin recover. I’m now using it on the nights I don’t use a retinoid as it counters the irritating effects very well. I didn’t have so much success using it in the morning as I got pilling after putting on SPF and makeup on top but this is standard for me as I use a lot SPF and find the only way to prevent pilling is to use a very light moisturiser.
Marine Complex is £125 for 50ml and available HERE.
