Every year Aveda celebrates Earth Month with the release of a candle with the aim of raising both funds and awareness for local and global environmental organisations. This year they hope to make $6.5 million to dedicate to protecting water.
The ‘Light the Way’ Candle is £16 and Aveda donates 100% of this (minus VAT). Unlike a lot of charity initiatives that brands promote, Aveda aren’t even covering their own costs and this has to be commended. It’s through measures like this that it’s raised such huge amounts in the past – $50 million overall and $13 million through ‘Light the Way’ Candle sales.
Aveda even has an Earth and Community Care division to oversea projects that have helped bring clean water to thousands of people which has directly led to reduced incidents of waterborne illnesses.
The candle itself is lovely. It has a warm and comforting scent of vanilla, cinnamon and ylang ylang from Madagascar. The images on the carton were created by the children living in the region of Manakara, Madagascar who’ve benefited from Earth month funded projects so it all ties in really nicely.
As well as buying the candle another way of getting involved is to text “Aveda’ to 70123′ to donate £3 to WaterAid and Aveda Earth Month. You can also take things a step further by taking part in the #Aveda5Mile challenge which involves covering a distance of 5 miles anyway you choose (running, walking, cycling etc.) and sharing an inspirational image and the previously mentioned hashtag on social media and then tag a friend to take on the challenge too (not forgetting to text ‘Aveda’ to 70123 of course). I’ll be doing this soon so look out for my image on my Instagram feed.
You can buy the ‘Light The Way’ Candle from the Aveda site now.
