The big emphasis of the Zelens makeup range, Active Colour, is that all the products have a high concentration of ingredients normally reserved for skincare products. While this definitely makes them well worth using, I think the product shades deserves equal amounts of attention. The truth is a great formulation is meaningless if the colours aren’t flattering on the face.
I’ve a stack of blushers but my Zelens one in Apricot is what I reach for the most as it gives the most natural flush of colour and is impossible to apply badly (great for when you’re in a rush). I also have the same amount of love for the Youth Glow Foundation and Active Concealer. They enhance skin beautifully and contain skin-saving ingredients but it’s the shades that draws me to them the most.
I now feel the same way about the new Extreme Velvet Treatment Lip Colour. The list of good things in these lipsticks is as long as your arm and they’ve cracked the code on making a matt lipstick that’s smoothing, hydrating and weightless but when I look at them it’s the shades that gets my heart beating faster.
There’s only 9 colours but each one deserves its place in the range. These aren’t novelty, fun for five minutes lipsticks. These are enduring classics that will get used until they’re gone. The colours fall mainly into the red or nude categories and, as I hardly every wear reds, it’s the nudes that I’m most enamoured with. Special mentions needs to go to Nude Beige as it’s the kind of pale nude that’s so hard to get right and you can try a 100 before finding the perfect one. This one isn’t chalky, too grey and nor does it make me look washed out – basically, it’s that 1 in a 100.
I think ‘velvet’ and ‘soft matt’ is a good way to describe the texture of these lipsticks as they’re far from being drying or powdery. In fact, thanks to the high quality ingredients, they’re extremely moisturising and make lips look plumper and more defined. They’re highly pigmented and have great staying power.
Going back to the list of active ingredients in Extreme Velvet – it is very impressive and clinical studies have shown that one month of daily application can result in an increase in lip moisture by 54.2% and an increase in lip volume by 20.5%. Ingredient highlights for me include Tripeptide, Retinol Ester and Hyalrunonic Acid but you can read the full list and what they do HERE.
The Zelens Extreme Velvet Lipsticks are £32 and available now.
