The question of whether a separate eye product is necessary is the subject of much debate in the beauty world and my view is that as the skin around the eye is different to the rest of the face (thinner, more delicate, less oil glands, more prone to puffiness) a product formulated especially for that area is a must. And when I ask cosmetic doctor for an eye product recommendation the most popular answer is the Elastiderm series by Obagi.
Obagi Medical was the first medi-grade range of skincare available and is still considered to be a front runner amongst clinical brands. It’s mainly only available directly from clinics (though there are some online specialised retailers that are starting to sell it) and this is because some of the products are only available on prescription or contain a high level actives. Therefore, solid advice is needed to get the best the results and nurses and doctors can be counted on to provide this.
There are 3 products in the Elastiderm series – a cream, a gel and a rollerball serum. Though the cream is recommended for night and the gel for daytime I prefer the light texture of the gel for both day and night. I also like the pump dispenser the gel comes in better than the jar that comes with the cream. The serum is perfect for a refresh during the day and has caffeine in it which is great for puffiness.
Both the cream and the gel contain the same key ingredients which help actually treat the eye area as opposed to just plumping it out so that wrinkles look reduced:
Bi-mineral Complex: Incl. zinc and copper to help restore elasticity and build collagen
Malonic Acid: Helps stimulate the production of skin cells
Blueberry Extract: Antioxidants that help eliminate free radicals
Penetrating Therapeutics: An Obagi technology that helps drive the ingredients deep into the skin where it’s needed.
Personally, I think the gel has helped improve the area around my eyes but I tend to look to skincare for help in slowing down the rate my skin ages as that’s more realistic and there’s good reason to think that the Elastiderm series will do that. My only criticism is that the product is a bit boring to use as the packaging is so bland but that’s something I can live with in return for good results.
