I’ve been listening a lot to 64 Bits and Malachite by Baloji and I’m particularly addicted to Spoiler. It combines about 14 different genres of music and while being upbeat and energetic it also has an aggressive edge to it. The words are mainly sang in French but they’re subtitles on the Spoiler video and the lyrics include, ‘Cold piss, frigid – Running your mouth to go nowhere’. Makes a change from the usual anodyne lyrics in most new songs I hear.
Is Beauty Skin Deep…? – A Lecture From Dr Steven Shiel (Scientific Director L’Oreal UK/Ireland)
I’m an affiliate member of the Society Of Cosmetic Scientists and one of the benefits is that I get to attend lectures given by cosmetic industry insiders. Last week I went to one at the Royal Society of Chemistry that’s in the stunning court yard next door to the Royal Academy of Arts in W1. The talk was by Dr Steven Shiel from L’Oreal and he started of discussing how we define beauty and the cultural, psychological and physiological elements that influence our perception of what we find attractive. He then went on to discuss hair and the ways it is different depending on natural colouring, age and whether it’s been chemically treated. It was a lively and stimulating discussion and I came away hugely better informed.
I bought a new Bella Freud jumper which is warm, goes with lots of things and something I hope will last me a while. Though I love her ‘1970’ jumpers they’ve become a bit too ubiquitous so I went for a ‘Pressure’ one instead. I also bought a flouncy skirt from Debenhams which I think will look nice with a pair of pointy flats with ankle ties (once the weather gets a bit warmer). I was ‘inspired’ by a Sandro one I spotted in Vogue (which doesn’t seem to be available yet) but I didn’t want to spend a lot as I think the style might be one of those one season trends.
