Though By Invitation by Michael Bublé is described as being a scented love letter to his fans it’s such a lovely fragrance that it will have a much wider appeal than with those who listen to his albums. I really like Michael Bublé as a music artist but, as someone with a passion for perfume, By Invitation speaks to me more as a lover of fine fragrances than it does as a Michael Bublé fan.
In the past couple of years I’ve really immersed myself in the world of fragrances by reading lots of perfume related books and attending talks. It’s such a fascinating subject and the more I’ve learnt the more I appreciate fragrances as a form of art in the same way as I do music, film, design etc. – they can stimulate and elevate emotions deep inside of you.
It’s now become a pleasure of mine to discover new scents and my first encounter with By Invitation was when I smelled it on Paula from LDN Diaries. It was one of those ‘Mmm, what’s that perfume you’re wearing?’ moments. It’s definitely the kind of scent that draws you into the person wearing it.
By Invitation really isn’t just another celebrity fragrance because Michael didn’t just lend his name to the project – he was throughly involved in every step of the process. He said he’s ‘inviting women to enjoy a beautiful scent that represents my personal taste and imagination’ and this fragrance proves that his taste and imagination are impeccable.
To create the scent of his dreams, Michael worked with leading French perfumer, Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, who relished being able to use the finest ingredients without restrictions. As Karine puts it ‘The result is beautiful and exquisitely reflects the way he would love a woman to smell’.
The gorgeous scent is matched in beauty by the elegant bottle. Michael worked with the design team to come up with something that’s classic but with a modern twist. The way the bottle is suspended in a gold bangle brings to mind a piece of luxury jewellery and it’s definitely something you’ll want to put on display.
The scent itself is complex, intriguing and not like anything I’ve experienced before. I’m going to list the notes below but, as is usual with perfume, they don’t really give the real story. By Invitation is a Floral Oriental which is my favourite fragrance family. It has a crisp and bright opening which for me is defined by the red berries. It then moves on to become quite sensual but with a spiciness so it’s in no way heady. On the dry down I can really pick out a candied nutty element to it – something creamy rather than sweet and cloying – but it also still retains the lovely spiciness from earlier.
Another aspect that impresses me about By Invitation is that it easily lasts the day or evening. This also highlights that high quality ingredients have been used and that it’s a premium item (though thankfully its price is more in the mid-range bracket).
