I don’t suffer from a chronically dry and itchy head but I do keep a sensitive shampoo on hand to turn to occasionally, just like I have one for detoxifying. I don’t use it every time I wash my hair but they certainly have their uses.
The one I’ve been trying recently is the Aveeno Skin Relief Soothing Shampoo. I first tried it after having my hair dyed as this seems to sensitise my scalp, particularly if I do it myself as too much dye always ends up on my head. I definitely feel my scalp benefitted from this gentler shampoo.
It’s also great to use when you’re moving between extremes in temperature ie. cold outside to central heating inside. Just as this takes it’s toll on facial skin, it effects the scalp as well (or at least it does with me).
I also use a sensitive shampoo if I end up washing my hair more often than usual and Aveeno Skin Relief Soothing Shampoo can be used daily.
Aveeno is a brand that specialises in products for sensitive skin that rely on the properties of oats. The reason for the oats and their extracts boils down to their ability to protect and repair the all important skin barrier function. They work by moisturising, soothing, creating a protective film on the surface of the skin and returning it a normal pH level.
In this day and age, a product like Skin Relief Soothing Shampoo wouldn’t appeal unless it also left hair clean and feeling soft, which it does. I’ve also been successfully using it on my 6 year old daughter who’s skin is a lot more sensitive than mine and normal kids shampoo makes her more prone to an itchy head.
The instructions are to leave it in for a few minutes before rinsing. I did this when I used it after dying my hair but not on the other times I’ve used it and not on my daughter and it still works well.
Aveeno Skin Relief Soothing Shampoo is £9.49 for 300ml. However, Boots are currently running a 1/3 off promotion on all Aveeno products so it’s now £6.33.
