If you’re interested in nutrition, it’s highly likely you’ve been hearing a lot about the latest ‘it’ food, bone broth. As I tend to slavishly follow the latest ‘must-eats for eternal health’ trends, I’m really keen to start drinking broth regularly.
The problem is that broths are a bugger to make as you have to cook the bones for between 6 and 12 hours depending on whether you’re making the chicken version or the beef. I’m so unqualified about such matters that I don’t even know if it’s safe to go out while it’s cooking or if it can be left on overnight. I did make one attempt at making my own broth when I knew I’d be at home for a 6 hour stretch to watch over it but had to abandon the project because my daughter complained about the stink and she did have a point.
That’s why I was delighted to see that Daylesford have started selling readymade broths. There’s three types: chicken, beef and spring green veg & seaweed (which isn’t actually a bone broth but has lots of healthy ingredients nevertheless).
The Daylesford’s broths are fresh, organic and the chicken and beef ones look like they’re the real deal. However, they are very expensive. Ocado sells them for £3.99 (500ml) but I think they’re a pound more in the Daylesford shops.
They also contain a scary amount of salt which I think must undo all the health benefits that you’re drinking the broth for in the first place. The Chicken Bone Broth contains the most with 2.2mg for a 250 ml serving which equates to about a mugs worth. This is over a third of the official recommended daily salt of 6g. The Beef Bone Broth fairs a little better at 1g for a 250ml serving.
Considering how much salt all three broths contain they taste quite bland. I like them but they don’t exactly tickle the taste buds and the flavours don’t even differ that much between them.
Personally, I don’t think there my answer to my quest for readymade broth so my search continues. Maybe someone will take inspiration from the Brodo, the hot broth bar in New York, and open something similar in London. And, if you wantt to have a go at making it yourself here’s a Hemsley and Hemsley recipe.
